Counseling Services for Pre-Teens and Teens
Navigating adolescence can be complex and challenging. Our virtual counseling services for pre-teens and teens offer a supportive environment for pre-teens and teens to explore their feelings, build self-esteem, and tackle the unique challenges of middle school and high school years.
What We Offer
- Virtual counseling sessions tailored to the developmental needs of adolescents.
- Support for issues such as anxiety, depression, bullying, peer pressure, and academic stress.
- Guidance for teens exploring their identity and navigating relationships.
Virtual Therapy for Pre-Teens and Teens
At Amy Brown Counseling, we began offering virtual online sessions to adolescents and teens during 2020. What we found is that this age group (age 12+), in particular, has a strong preference for conducting their therapy sessions online. They are comfortable with technology and enjoy the experience of engaging with a device for their conversations and emotional processing. This comfort level has resulted in, for many teen clients, an increased amount of sharing and openness, once therapeutic rapport has been built between the therapist and the teen. Pre-teens and teens are comfortable engaging in therapy from the comfort of their own homes and bedrooms. Once they are assured that their parents agree to provide them distance and privacy during the therapy hour, the majority of the adolescents and teens that we see jump directly into engaging in the therapeutic process from their phones, laptops, and/or tablets.
What Kinds of Presenting Problems and Concerns do you work with at Amy Brown Counseling?
We are open to working with teens who are struggling with a number of mental health concerns, and the following list captures some of the most common types of concerns that we see:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Perfectionism
- Anger management
- Family conflict
- School behavioral concerns
- Divorce/separation and co-parenting support
- Abuse/Trauma
- Children who are on the Autism Spectrum
- ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
- OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
- Grief and Loss after the death of a loved one
- Having parents who are struggling with substance abuse
And more…
Do parents need to log on and join each session, if the teen is able to log-in for session on their own?
Prior to meeting with your child/teen, the therapist will conduct a parent intake session in order to gather assessment information, family history, and hear more about your concerns for your child. The therapist also welcomes a check-in or check-out at the beginning or end of any session as a way to keep lines of communication going about changes, concerns, or updates on how your child/teen is doing. If the parent does not have any updates, the teen can certainly log on to their session independently and get started. The therapist will also let the parent know if they need to speak with them further during any given session or future session, such as a session where parent(s) and child/teen will be brought together by the therapist for a family session.
How Often Do Teens Meet with the Therapist for Sessions?
At Amy Brown Counseling, we understand that each individual’s journey through therapy is unique, and thus, we offer flexible scheduling to accommodate the varied needs of our clients. The frequency of sessions can be tailored to suit each person’s specific circumstances and stage of therapy. For some, particularly those navigating acute crises, meeting with a therapist twice a week may be beneficial to provide more intensive support. Others might find that weekly sessions are sufficient to progress towards their goals. For clients managing busy schedules or those who have seen significant improvements, bi-weekly or even monthly sessions might be appropriate. The frequency of therapy can always be adjusted over time in consultation with your therapist, ensuring that your mental health needs are being met effectively and efficiently.
