What We Offer

How Does Play Therapy Work When Provided Virtually?

Play therapy can be provided effectively both virtually and in person. Many families throughout Missouri appreciate the convenience, flexibility, and accessibility that online play therapy provides.

Children who participate in virtual play therapy simply need a quiet, private space where they can meet with their therapist by video. Therapists often incorporate the child’s favorite toys, books, games, art supplies, stuffed animals, and personal interests into sessions to help create an engaging and meaningful therapeutic experience.

Online play therapy allows children to receive support from the comfort and familiarity of home while still building a strong therapeutic relationship with their therapist. For many children, meeting in their own environment can help them feel more relaxed, comfortable, and willing to participate in the therapeutic process.

Why Do Children Benefit From Online Play Therapy?

Children often communicate differently than adults. While adults typically process emotions through conversation, children frequently express themselves through play, creativity, storytelling, games, drawing, and imaginative activities.

Online play therapy gives children a safe and supportive space to explore feelings, practice coping skills, build confidence, and work through challenges in developmentally appropriate ways. Through child-centered play therapy techniques, children are able to express emotions that they may not yet have the words to describe.

Many families are surprised by how naturally children engage in virtual play therapy. Because children participate from home, therapists are often able to incorporate favorite toys, books, art supplies, pets, collections, and personal interests directly into the therapeutic process.

Online play therapy can help children:

Play Therapy at Home

One of the unique advantages of online play therapy is the opportunity for therapists to work with children in the environment where they feel most comfortable and secure.

Many of our child clients participate in therapy sessions from their bedrooms, playrooms, or other familiar spaces within their homes. This often helps children feel more relaxed and willing to engage in the therapeutic process, especially during the early stages of building a relationship with their therapist.

Virtual play therapy also allows children to incorporate the items that are meaningful to them into sessions. Favorite stuffed animals, toys, books, artwork, collections, pets, and personal interests can all become valuable parts of the therapeutic experience.

By seeing children in their natural environment, therapists often gain additional insight into the child’s world, interests, strengths, and support systems. These opportunities can help strengthen rapport and create meaningful therapeutic connections.

Many parents appreciate the convenience of online play therapy as well. There is no need to spend time commuting to appointments, and children are able to transition directly from therapy back into their normal routines at home.

For many families throughout Missouri, online play therapy provides a convenient, effective, and engaging way for children to receive support while remaining in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable..

Do you meet with parents before meeting with their children for play therapy?

Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of the therapeutic process.

Before meeting with your child, your therapist will schedule an initial parent intake session. During this meeting, the therapist will gather information about your child’s history, current concerns, family dynamics, strengths, and goals for therapy.

This parent session also gives caregivers an opportunity to ask questions, share observations, and discuss any concerns they may have regarding their child’s emotional well-being, behavior, school performance, friendships, or family relationships.

Following the intake appointment, your child will typically begin meeting individually with their therapist during the next scheduled session. Throughout treatment, parents may continue to receive support, feedback, recommendations, and guidance to help reinforce progress at home.

Play Therapy Session Frequency

At Amy Brown Counseling, we understand that each individual’s journey through therapy is unique, and thus, we offer flexible scheduling to accommodate the varied needs of our clients.
The frequency of sessions can be tailored to suit each person’s specific circumstances and stage of therapy. For some, particularly those navigating acute crises, meeting with a therapist twice a week may be beneficial to provide more intensive support. Others might find that weekly sessions are sufficient to progress towards their goals. For clients managing busy schedules or those who have seen significant improvements, bi-weekly or even monthly sessions might be appropriate.
The frequency of therapy can always be adjusted over time in consultation with your therapist, ensuring that your mental health needs are being met effectively and efficiently.
